Date night last night with Scuba man. We went to the third Richmond Forum of the season. Last night’s speaker was Anderson Cooper.
I enjoy Cooper’s reporting. He has always seemed to not only report, but to really BE there, fascinated with what he is reporting on. Last night, I learned that is true. His interest is not just an act.
Anderson Cooper is for real. He spoke last night about how he got started and where his adventures have taken him. No just physically, but also emotionally.
He explained how he can report in these places where so much suffering and horror takes place. He IS affected by it. But, he understands that suffering and horrors will always be in this world. He can’t stop it, he can only report on it, draw attention to it.
When he spoke last night, it was from the heart. What you see is what you get. He’s not afraid to admit there are times he’s afraid, that if he thinks his report will put someone in danger of their life he won’t report it, that he sometimes is torn between having to report on a horrific situation and trying to figure out what would be the best shot for that report.
The main impression I took away from his presentation is that he is for real. For him, it’s not about being Anderson Cooper and establishing an Anderson Cooper brand. It’s about reporting the news, objectively, without unsubstantiated facts or opinions. He is passionate about what he does, and I think that is what makes him such a good journalist.
This was a presentation that Scuba man wasn’t exactly looking forward to, but he spoils me and we have the seasons tickets, so we went. And, he was impressed. He enjoyed the evening as much as I did.
All in all, it was a very fun date night.
