humans of new york

I was reading the news online this morning, as is usual.  I came across an article about Brandon Stanton, who moved to New York last fall.

Brandon is working on a project he calls Humans of New York.  He walks the streets of New York, taking photos of interesting people he encounters (after asking their permission).  He puts the photos on his website, also called Humans of New York.  His goal is 10,000 photos.  Once he has posted a good amount, he will link the photos to the neighbourhood where they were taken.

His project is about creating a photographic census of the city.  This concept has just floored me!  I love it.

I have always wanted to visit New York, to walk the streets, to experience each neighbourhood.  Now, I can do it vicariously through this website.

I’ve also been experiencing the city through another blog, The Settlers Give it Passion.  Kristin is also a New York City transplant.  I enjoy reading about her adventures as she becomes a New Yorker.  She’s an excellent writer.

I’m sure I’ll visit New York eventually.  Until then, I have Kristin to write the story and Brandon to photographic it.

Aw, thanks for the shoutout Shell! That Humans of New York project is really interesting! I looked at the first page of the site and knew I’d be sucked in for hours if I kept looking (which I’ll probably do this weekend). It’s really incredible.

Hi Shell, what a neat idea photographing just everyday people. It does give you a taste of the city. 🙂

What a great idea Shell, I’m sure it will be very popular – that kind of thing appeals to most people.

My husband and I have a couple of friends who live I believe in Manhatten, and they were born and raised there! When we talk to them on the phone, there accent is so strange to us! I think it’s a really cool accent! We have a strong southern accent! and they definatley have a “New York” accent! It’s pretty cool! As you, we hope to meet them one day. We’ve been friends with them for quite a while now, and with the gas prices the way they are, it would be a very expensive road trip! One day, though!!

I’ve been there 3 times – twice for business – once for pleasure. It is a must see for all Americans. But be prepared to bust the budget while you are there.
