a wild weekend

It has been quite the weekend at our household.  Hurricane Irene came to visit and left a mess behind, but no damage (that we know of) to the Richmond house.  Lots and lots of rain and some incredible wind gusts.

The front and back yard are a mess with tree limbs and leaves, but once it dries out a little, we’ll be able to clean that up.  Electricity, cable, and internet went down.  I was able to spend pretty much all of the weekend reading, instead of working like I planned to do.  Of course that put me behind on my work to-do list, but I can’t do anything about it.  Almost 3/4 of the people in the tri-cities area lost power.

We fared better than some and worse than some.  One of my co-workers got a branch through his roof, yet another didn’t even lose power.  Go figure.

We don’t know anything about the beach house yet.  There is virtually no communication on Hatteras Island yet.  Cell phones, landlines, electricity, and internet are all down.  The one road on and off the island has washed away in 6 places.  We can’t reach our friends to find out if they’re OK.  We have no idea when we will be allowed on the island to check out the damage.  News coming out of the island is sparse, to say the least.

The National Guard is down there, as is the Red Cross.  They are able to ferry in water and food.  The Red Cross has sent medical personnel.  The year round residents have been through this kind of thing a few times.  Most choose to stay even when the island is supposed to evacuate.  Once the hurricane goes through, they don’t know when they will be allowed back on the island, hence, they stay.

Well, back to work for me.  I’ll keep y’all posted.

Glad to hear you are ok Shell but please let us know about the beach house – when you can get to it.

  5. I’m so happy that you, Scuba Man, and the critters survived the storm. I am thinking good thoughts about your beach house and the island.

The water came up to the landing on the beach at ours, the power went out, and a few trees came down, but we weathered it out alright.

A big thank you to everyone! We have no news yet about the beach house. We don’t even have a time table as to when they will let us on the island. I saw aerial photos of the road where it was washed out, and it looks like it will tale them a while to get it fixed. 😦 I will let y’all know.
